Region/Country: Region/Land: Snæfellsnes, Iceland
Helgafell ("holy mountain") is a small mountain situated on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula just South of Stykkishólmur. Believed to have been a pre-christian sanctuary, the mountain remained a religious site when an Augustinian monastery was moved here from the island of Flatey in the 13th century. The monastery was abolished in 1550, but a (modern) church on the site still remains.
